Achieving Happiness
“I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness …” The Dalai Lama
Do you dream for long-lasting happiness? And do you believe deep down in your soul that you can be fully and completely happy?
Even when we have health, wealth and companionship we may still feel unfulfilled because the greatest limitation we face to enjoying full happiness is the way we think and feel. Abraham Lincoln once said, “a man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be.”
Our thoughts and feelings are connected to virtually everything we do, and can either limit us, or inspire us to change. A prime example is losing weight. We put off dieting because we fear that once we’ve lost the weight, we will put it back on again. The fear and frustration of failure creates a vicious circle and we lack the motivation to start or continue. We attempt change with a sense of dread because unconsciously we fear that the change will be temporary.
It is far more inspirational for us to focus on the positive feelings that the change will give us – perhaps the feeling of being more attractive, confident or energetic. Yet most of us have little training in how to change the way we feel. Although we can learn this. We can learn to change our limiting thoughts and feelings into empowering ones, and use these as powerful tools to inspire us.
In my work I’ve witnessed people finding the resources within them to change virtually anything and everything in their lives – sometimes in an instant. As an NLP trainer, I’ve seen people turn their dreams into reality, and produce specific, long-lasting, measurable change in their lives. People talk about finding their “leverage point”, the point that when changed transforms every other aspect in their life with virtually no effort. For example, changing a few words within your habitual vocabulary can immediately change your feelings. Or changing a limiting belief can powerfully affect your happiness for the rest of your life.
We operate as a complex system. We have filters that delete, distort and generalise the information that we receive from our external environment. These filters include our memories, values, beliefs, thoughts, decisions, personality type and the language we use. However, these filters operate unconsciously meaning that these are outside of our awareness. These filters sometimes help us to achieve the results we want and sometimes create results we do not want. And some of these filters aren’t even ones we’ve chosen. We’ve inherited these from our childhood often representing our parents’ and teachers’ values. For example, if we take this important filter of our values, as we mature these older inherited values can conflict with more recently acquired ones. These conflicting values can create confusion, conflicting outcomes, undesired results and emotional upheaval. This can make us feel as if life is just happening to us and that much of it is outside our conscious control.
In NLP we endeavour to gain more control over our lives and results by making this filtering process conscious. We teach techniques to help you to negotiate between conflicting values and beliefs, form more empowering ones and achieve your dreams.
By changing your thoughts and feelings you can find happiness. And you can make your dreams a reality, becoming whoever you want to be.
