Why Coaching is Particularly Beneficial at Midlife
Anger, jealousy, lying, resentment, blame and greed are all feelings and behaviors that arise from the unconscious part of ourselves, particularly at midlife. Everyone has a shadow, which begins to develop in childhood as a result of stuffing away negative feelings in order to build a proper ego. We encounter our shadow when we feel an unexplained dislike of someone, when we uncover a long-buried, unacceptable trait in ourselves, or when we feel overwhelmed by anger, envy or shame.
Coaching provides us with the ideal opportunity to examine and explore this part of our psyche. We are able to examine the beliefs and decisions - most probably made in our early childhood - that are no longer serving us; for example, the constant need to be perfect in order to please our parents and teachers. Striving to achieve such continuous perfection can exhaust us and cause physical and mental burn-out, stress and other health problems. Or maybe you felt abandoned or unloved in childhood leading to relationships issues. Coaching enables us to revisit these limiting decisions and beliefs with the wisdom of an adult. This way, we can learn to re-evaluate and reframe these old experiences with new more empowering beliefs and values. This enables us to become more empowered, balanced and whole.
In addition, midlife is a time when we may start feeling the need to be connected to something greater than ourselves, and we become concerned about the kind of society that we leave for our future generations. If this is happening to you, you can use this coaching to reflect on these emerging needs and concerns.
